A Little Background on Carnatic Music

Indian Classical Music has two main systems, North Indian Classical Music, and South Indian Classical Music. The North Indian music is called Hindustani and the South Indian counterpart is referred as Carnatic music.

Carnatic music is one of the most ancient systems of music and its history dating back to the age of the Vedas. Devotional content is an important element of Carnatic Music which is imbued with emotion and the spirit of improvisation. Improvisation is the uniqueness of Indian music. With the imagination and the creativity, a great artist can communicate and instill in his listener the mood of the Ragas.

The basic form is a monophonic song with improvised variations. The basis of Carnatic music is the system of ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles).

The most important specialty of Carnatic music is its highly devotional element. The concept of the compositions is set entirely against a devotional outline. Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri, the three saint composers of the 19th century, have composed thousands of krithis that remain fresh among musicians and rasikas.
